Backwoods Cooking & Bushcraft – Week 3

Developing from the exciting bushcraft course that has been run over the last few years, we will be turning our hand to develop more culinary skills with a focus on backwoods cooking. Have you ever found yourself in the wild and want to know how to light a fire and cook up a feast? Then this is the course for you! Over the week we will move through all of the skills needed for cooking in the wild, starting with the basics of lighting a fire (even in the rain) and progressing on to learning how to prepare and cook your food. You will get the opportunity to make simple survival foods (such as nettle soup or damper bread) through to making wild pizzas or preparing and cooking game. This is a brilliant opportunity to build up your cooking skills without the luxury of a gas stove. Improvisation is a key part of the course, so bring your ideas and be prepared to cook in ways you didn’t think were possible.

Covid-19 update

Backwoods Cooking & Bushcraft will be going ahead as planned. Pupils will be taught in small ‘bubbles’ with a dedicated assistant tutor, with the main tutor delivering to the whole group. Any shared equipment will be used by the tutors only and sanitised regularly.

Tutor Profile

James Hutchings teaches physics and technology at the Perse,  as well as working with the Outdoor Pursuits Department as a canoe, kayak and climbing coach. He has completed a wide range of expeditions in the UK and abroad, and is also very passionate about living in the outdoors and bushcraft skills. These bushcraft skills are used on a regular basis to teach young people about survival, carving, fire lighting, outdoor cooking and shelter building amongst other things and are a real passion of his.
